From athletes to top-models, celebrities and their trainers, the benefits of an infrared sauna are echoed all around the world.
While we all know the power of a good sweat sesh through exercise, both mental and physical, an infrared sauna delivers some of the same results without you having to lift a finger. The equivalent of running 3-4km, a 45-minute session can burn up to 400 - 600 calories.
Known for its deep cleansing abilities, we are so excited to bring you our very own infrared sauna for you to reap the benefits, located in our luxurious new space, Self by The Parlour Room.
So, what’s the difference between a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna?
Compared to a traditional sauna where the heat is quite humid and your body is encouraged to sweat through the build-up of steam and hot air. An infrared sauna is much drier so you can typically last longer than you normally would.
Instead of heating the air around you like a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna uses infrared heat lamps where light is transmitted to penetrate deep below the skin’s surface.
This directly raises your core temperature, stimulating your body's metabolic response to eliminate the build-up of toxins found deeper within the body. Evoking more profound detoxification.
What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?
Because infrared saunas are so effective in detoxifying the body, comes with it are a whole range of complimentary benefits as well, from:
better sleep
relaxation
detoxification
weight loss
relief from muscle soreness & joint pain
clear and tighter skin
improved circulation
How often should you use an infrared sauna?
This is completely up to the individual. Depending on your level of activity and the benefits you’re looking to achieve, a single session every couple of weeks might be enough, others may want to include it in their weekly routine.
Typically speaking, a regular 45-minute session, at least 2-3 days apart will yield best results.
How should I prepare for a session?
Make sure you’re well-hydrated, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. It’s recommended you try and drink at least 1 litre more than you normally would on any given day. You’re going to sweat a lot so hydration is key. At Self, we offer clients a towel and water prior to their session. Most places will do this but it’s always beneficial to bring your own along as well.
What do I wear in an infrared sauna?
As little as possible. Some like to wear swimmers, others like to go naked but it’s completely up to you.
What do I do after a session?
You need to rehydrate immediately following your session. You would have experienced an intense period of dehydration so it’s important you let your body cool down and drink some water. At Self, clients are invited to shower following their session, this allows you to wash off all the sweat and toxins so your body doesn’t reabsorb while you’re cooling down.
Some might continue sweating post-session - this is normal and it’s just your body cooling down. Because of this, we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes and avoid scheduling any intense activity following your session. Give your body some time to relax.
