Saying Yes To The Dress? The Designer Behind Kyha Studios Tells Us Everything You Need To Know

For many, choosing a wedding dress has been a childhood dream. But when it comes to saying yes to the dress (presumably one of the most expensive items you’ll ever hang in your wardrobe), the process can be quite overwhelming. So to help all our future brides to be, we spoke with Khya Scott, founder and creative director of Kyha Studios to share some words of wisdom that will help make the process as easy and stress-free as possible.

When it comes to choosing a dress, how far out from the big day do you recommend brides start looking?

The excitement of becoming engaged often is the beginning of wedding research. Identifying designers who feel aligned with your style is a great place to start. Making an appointment 10 to 12 months in advance and confirming your dress 9 to 10 months in advance means you can secure the fabrics and looks that you want with no restrictions - as well as give yourself plenty of time to get excited for your day!

What do you recommend a Bride should bring or wear to a dress fitting?

Nude underwear is a must to ensure you experience the true aesthetic of your gown and, for the same reason, heels similar in height to what you are planning for your big day can also be really helpful.

How does the usual process of choosing a dress work?

Trying on various styles to understand how different silhouettes work on your body will allow you to narrow your choices - and will eventually lead you to your perfect gown. Once you have chosen your gown, our stylists work with you to ensure that all elements are covered for your look, including hair and make up suggestions, jewellery, and veils if you choose to wear one.

What it comes to selecting a dress, what’s one piece of advice you always recommend?

Make sure it feels like an extension of your personality and style.

What’s the biggest mistake you see a lot of brides make when it comes to selecting the dress?

Brides may want to adapt or change a design to make it their own, however the designer or brand have carefully considered all elements of the piece to ensure the best fit and a considered aesthetic. As a result, the outcome of changing designs can often disappoint. If you love the gown the way it is, don't change it - there are plenty of ways you can make the look your own through styling. And if you do make changes, make sure you are very clear on how that will change the look and feel of the gown. 

What’s the biggest trend you’re seeing at the moment?

Definitely the return of the ballgown. Our Monte, Halston and August gown epitomize this new trend and have been very popular amongst our customers. Coming in a close second is a strong trend towards party gowns or separates for brides looking for a second look for their reception.

What do you suggest brides steer clear of?

Anything that makes them feel uncomfortable or unlike themselves.

Any other helpful pieces of advice for brides when it comes to choosing their wedding dress?

When looking for your gown, keep in mind that it's best to have just a few people whose trusted opinion counts. It can be an overwhelming process and having too many people and opinions can become easily confusing.
