Tanning

A gorgeous golden glow will not only have you look amazing but feel amazing too.

Need To Know

  • We recommend booking a trial tan appointment at least 2 weeks prior to the wedding. This way you can test the colour and see how it wears, and ensure any remaining residue comes off in time before the event. A great time for this is the hen’s party so you can see how you like the colour in the photos.

  • When booking your final wedding day spray tan, we recommend doing this 48hrs in advance. So if it’s a Saturday wedding, book in for Thursday evening.

  • To make the most of your tan, you need to invest in a good exfoliation mitt, nourishing moisturiser and gradual tanner

  • One of the leading causes of a patchy tan is a lack of exfoliating and not moisturising well enough in the weeks leading up to the event. Tanning solution tends to hold onto dry skin more, so if you haven’t exfoliated, this skin is more likely to lift prematurely and as such, result in a patchy finish.

  • If you have time, we recommend booking in for a total body exfoliation at Self (Vanilla Body Bliss Treatment) 2 weeks before the wedding, as this will ensure your skin is in ideal condition and well-nourished, for a flawless spray tan.

  • To help extend the life of your tan with a nice even finish, make sure you have a gradual tanner with you at all times. Not only do they have the added benefit of increased hydration but they’re perfect for adding depth to areas where the tan may start to lift.

  • If you are having a makeup trial, try time this around tan trial as well. This way the makeup artist can match the foundation to your tanned skin tone. Similarly, if you are buying the foundation your self.

  • The style of your dress is important. If you’re wearing a strapless or low back dress, ensure you scrub those harder to reach places and to be safe, avoid wearing a bra after your tan so that you don’t leave any bra strap marks in these areas.

    PRE TAN

    • Shower and exfoliate your skin

    • Do not apply moisturiser, perfume or deodorant

    • We advise any hair removal to be done at least 24 hours before your appointment to ensure that your tan will go on evenly and not irritate your skin

    • Remove all jewellery before your appointment

    POST TAN

    • After your tan, we recommend wearing loose, dark clothing and flip flops. Ensure you are covered head to toe from water if the weather is wet

    • After your appointment, it is normal to look a lot darker. Don’t panic, this is just the bronzer in the tan so we can see where we are spraying. It will all wash off with your first shower, leaving your natural bronzed looking skin underneath.

    • If you have an express tan, do not use any soap when you first have a shower. Rinse off the tan residue with water and softly pat your skin dry. It will look like it has all come off but don’t worry, your tan will continue to develop over the next 6-8 hours

    • If you sleep in your tan, please be aware tan residue can transfer onto your sheets and pyjamas

    • Avoid using deodorant, perfume, or moisturiser until the next day

    • Avoid excess sweating or swimming for the first 24 hours after your tan

    • If you are wearing a white outfit and are worried about tan rubbing off onto your clothing, we suggest having 2 initial showers to ensure all the tan residue has been removed

FAQs

MY WEDDING IS ON SATURDAY, WHEN SHOULD I BOOK IN?

The ideal time is 48hrs in advance so if your wedding is on Saturday, book for Thursday afternoon/evening. This will allow enough time for the tan to develop and any remaining residue to come off.

WHAT TAN IS BEST? EXPRESS OR OVERNIGHT?

This really depends on how much time you have. For our dark tan lovers, we always recommend going for one you can sleep in as it really takes 8-12hrs for the tan to fully develop. However, there has been so much technological advancement in the express solutions that you can still achieve a really beautiful bronze in as little as 2hrs. The express tans are our most popular choice.

SHOULD I TAN MY FACE?

We always encourage a light spray of the face to ensure a nice even glow all over however there are a number of beautiful home-products that are perfect for building this colour up.

WHAT COLOUR BASE SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY SKIN TYPE?

Everyone’s skin is so unique and will react differently so we always advise on coming in for a trial spray tan so you can see how it wears throughout the days following and how it looks in photos.

HELP! IT’S RAINING WHAT DO I DO?

If it’s raining when you go for your tan, wear loose clothing, bring an umbrella and wait until it’s slowed down before walking outside. If it’s a total disaster, scrub it off and book in for another tan. We have express tans available (30min - 2hr) so you’ll be fine!

HELP! I JUST CAME OUT OF THE SHOWER AND ALL MY TAN HAS COME OFF!

No need to worry, when you shower off express tans all the bronzer in the solution washes off however the solution will continue to develop for 8-12 hours following application.

I JUST GOT MY SPRAY TAN BUT MY UNDERARM AND NECK AREA HAS DARK PATCHES?

Tanning solution tends to hold onto dry skin so it’s likely you’ve missed these areas when exfoliating in the lead up to your appointment. If it’s significantly darker, you can try lightly exfoliate however the best way to avoid this is to make sure you’re following the prep beforehand.

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK IN MY HAIR REMOVAL?

So that you’re not interfering with the tan and potentially causing it to lift prematurely, we recommend booking in all your hair removal at least 72hrs beforehand so that the tan will apply evening and not irritate the skin.

HOW DO I EXTEND THE LIFE OF MY TAN?

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise and make sure you have a good gradual tanner at the ready to help with an even finish. Well-moisturised skin will also help lift the tan evenly when you do decide to take it off.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO GET RID OF A TAN?

As long as you’ve kept your skin nice and hydrated, all it should take is a good exfoliating mitt and 2-3 showers. Just make sure you keep on top of the knees, underarm, neck and elbows as they’re the areas that tend to flake and go patchy first.
