How To Keep Your Skin Safe This Summer
Whilst we are super excited for a long Sydney summer, we are also aware that at this time of the year, skin damage occurs.
It’s inevitable when living in Australia, to be exposed to the sunshine now and then (yes, we are very lucky). And whilst sunshine is important for hormones and happiness, too much of it is dangerous.
Your skin is the most important thing you will ever wear (along with a smile). As a vital organ, it needs plenty TLC including sleep, lots of water and facials.
And whilst Vitamin D from the sun is good for our skin, did you know?
Sun damage can happen even when the sun is not shining.
UV Rays reflect off surfaces such as water, sand and grass, and this reflection can still burn our skin
You need to protect your eyes! Sun damage can affect our eyes too!
Founder of The Parlour Room, Natalie Papadopoulos, shared her sun-safe tips for summer:
“I always use an SPF sunscreen whenever I leave the house, and I always make sure I cover-up. Take clothes or umbrellas to the beach so that you can give your skin a break during the hottest times of the day.”
But other than the obvious slip slop slap and wearing a hat, we have some other sun-safe tips to help you look golden, without the damage this summer.
1. Fake it - DON’T BAKE IT.
Unfortunately, when it comes to tanning and sun damage, we were not created equal. Our skin colour can help determine the likelihood of sun damage. Fair hair, blue-eyed beauties must watch out, as they are most susceptible to damage. But without wanting to scare our readers, anyone can get skin cancer, no matter what shade of skin they are blessed with.
So with that in mind, forget about the golden natural tans of the ’70s and ’80s. Be smarter than that (You’ll thank yourself later).
Modern beauty technology allows us to look golden without the sunspots, wrinkles and melanomas, thanks to spray tans. Our beauty professionals will cater the tan to suit your skin type, allowing you to look like a bronzed goddess all year round. To try one of our amazing spray tans book here.
We also suggest using a gradual tanner. The Sunescape Gradual Tanner is an ultra-hydrating moisturiser, rich in antioxidants and essential oils. It keeps your skin subtle while building a gradual tan. It will keep you safe and sun-kissed all at once.
2. Keep your skin healthy and hydrated
Swimming in the ocean and sipping on a spritz, as well as soaking up sunshine will all lead to your skin needing some TLC. Other than drinking plenty of water, there are certain treatments designed to keep your skin supple, radiant and youthful, rather than dry and weathered.
To keep your skin hydrated this summer, try one of our Self facials. We have a number of bespoke treatments designed to help correct any skin concerns, including a lack of hydration and skin tone. The products used will be based on the objective for the treatment, and we recommend including an OMNILUX and O COSMEDICS Peel as well to exfoliate, rejuvenate and repair the skin.
3. Slip Slop Slap the new way
As beauty professionals, we are advocates for slip slop slap, in both the traditional sunscreen sense and in the non-traditional sense. We advise our clients to use products that enhance your skin's natural glow.
One of our favourite products is the O Cosmedics SPF Mineral Pro. It is a lightweight daily moisturiser which provides broad-spectrum UVA & UVB protection. It helps to prevent solar keratoses, sunspots and reduces the risk of some skin cancers. When used daily as directed this sun cream can aid in the prevention of sun-induced premature skin aging thus preserving the youthfulness of your skin.
Another great product is the Comfort Cream moisturiser. This amazing product contains precious oils, EFA’s super antioxidants, intense hydration and a V8 Peptide Complex®. It helps battle UV stress and aging.
4. Have a siesta
The sun is its strongest during the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. So instead of roasting your skin like a Christmas turkey, take this time during the middle of the day to go shopping, do some work, have a nap or treat yourself to a relaxing body treatment. Any excuse to avoid being in the sun during these hours is worth it. Especially if it’s spent, relaxing, keeping cool and indulging in Self…
At Self we have a wide variety of treatments on offer including body wraps, massages, scrubs, and facials. To find out how you can spoil yourself rather than damage your skin, go to our treatments page and book an appointment today.
